Tata Steel Europe (formerly Corus) is Europe's largest steel maker, with operations in the UK and mainland Europe. Formed in 1999 through the merger of British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens, Tata Steel Europe was acquired by Tata Steel in January 2007.
Tata Steel Europe has a crude steel production of 20 million tonnes and supplies long and strip products to the construction, automotive, packaging, aerospace, engineering and energy industries worldwide.
Areas of business
Tata Steel Europe makes carbon steels, which gives it a competitive position in the construction and automotive sectors; it also makes engineering steels and is developing new advanced high strength steels. The company is organised under three operating divisions.
- The long products division supplies plate, sections, wire-rod and semi-finished steel for the construction and industrial segments, as well as railway products. Other products include engineering billets, straight and cooled bars, turned-drawn and ground bars and hot-rolled narrow strips, steel tubes, pipes and slabs.
- The strip products division supplies hot-rolled steel strips, cold-rolled and metallic-coated steel, light-gauge coated steel for packaging and non-packaging applications, pre-finished steels, plated precision-strip products with specialist finishes and electrical steels and transformer cores.
- The distribution and building systems division oversees service centres in the UK and other countries. It also supplies steel and aluminium building systems and provides consultancy services.
Tata Steel Europe also manufactures aluminium from its smelters in Delfzijl in the Netherlands and Voerde in Germany.
Location
Tata Steel Europe has manufacturing operations in many countries, with plants in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Norway and Belgium. Carbon steel is produced at four integrated steelworks, at Port Talbot, Scunthorpe and Teesside in the UK and at IJmuiden in the Netherlands. Engineering steels are produced at Rotherham, UK.
